Urgent Action on Town & Country Center!

2006-12-14

Friends of Town & Country Center:

The Town & Country Center is back in the spotlight and action is urgently needed now.  In a courageous act, yesterday the City's Historic Site Preservation Board (HSPB) nominated the T&CC for designation as a Class One Historic Site!  Owner John Wessman has come out strongly against the nomination and today, in the Desert Sun, an article describing the news was published: http://www.thedesertsun.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061213/NEWS01/612130312/1006/news01

Contrary to the article's statement that designation (and preservation of the T&CC) would 'drive a stake into Wessman's plans for downtown Palm Springs,' our position continues to be that the removal of the failed Fashion Plaza is not linked to the fate of the T&CC.

Here's how the battle appears to be playing out:

  • The HSPB will most likely take public testimony for T&CC designation at their January 9 meeting.  They may decide on designation at that time.
  • If designation is recommended by the HSPB, the City Council will decide whether to approve landmark status perhaps as early as two or three weeks later (i.e. late January or early February)

Friends of Town & Country Center, we have much work to do!!!
